How to Become an Event Planner

Do you think that you have what it takes to become an event planner?
You do not need a background in event planning to become an expert!
Just with some organizing and planning competences, you have the basic skills required to plan your first events.

The first thing to do is to decide which type of event planner you want to become; figuring out which of these two categories you are enjoying more
There are two main categories which are :

  1. Social Planner
    Social planning includes weddings, birthdays, parties, anniversaries, holidays and reunions.
  2. Corporate Planner
    Corporate planning includes meetings, company events, seminars and charities.

There are ways to become successful in both, but we recommend you to first master one of those.

Get contacts and experience

After you decided which area you would like to be an expert, get experience and volunteer your time in a variety of event services. Your success in event planning will be based on your past experiences. Also, it is important to have some skills such as verbal and written communication, time, organization and budget management, marketing and more.

Moreover, in event planning, networking is key! Wherever you go, collect the contact information of the people you meet. Your first clients will come from your network.

Start your business

You must register your business name and check with your local government to find out what licenses you need to run a business. Also, one of the most important thing is to obtain a business insurance to protect yourself.

Create then an event portfolio. Show your past events with photos and brochures. Organize the portfolio to easily present your experience and event stories.

Keep it on track

Before you tell anyone, you are now in business! But do not forget to develop and update your business plan. This will help determining your fee structure.

Furthermore, it is important to secure funding for your business. You may have access to some cash through public funding, business angels and other venture capitalists. However, it is possible to establish your business on (your own) limited funds, which makes it less risky.

Last but not least : think about marketing. Create a website for your business and open social media accounts such as a Facebook fan page, an Instagram account and a LinkedIn profile in order to be visible. You will also need business cards, contract templates and so on.
